Historie plemene a počátky chovu
Plemeno Cane corso patří mezi poměrně mladá plemena. Přesto je to plemeno s velice dlouhou historií a pohnutým osudem. Psi, kteří velice silně připomínají plemeno Cane corso najdeme vyobrazené na starověkých rytinách i na středověkých obrazech. Bohužel, jak čas plynul, upadalo toto dříve oblíbené plemeno do zapomnění. Teprve v roce 1973 bylo znovu povšimnuto a téměř ihned byli vyhledáni žijící exempláře s cílem toto polozapomenuté italské plemeno znovu oživit. Díky této snaze byl následně v roce 1983 mezinárodně uznán plemenný standard znovuvzkříšeného plemene Cane corso.
Povahové vlastnosti
Toto plemeno je dílem paradoxů, protože psi Cane corso vynikají nad jiné svou obrovskou odvahou až nezkrotností, díky které se stali obdivovanými strážci lidí i jejich majetků, přičemž v jejich hrudi tluče srdce skutečných rodinných mazlů, ochotných dětsky dovádět se svým pánem i jeho dětmi. Vztah Cane corso k dalším možným zvířatům v rodině je dobrý, pokud si na ně tito psi mohli přivyknout již ve štěněčím věku. Výchova Cane corso ale úplně snadná není, toto plemeno vyžaduje zkušeného chovatele.
Tělesná konstituce
Psi plemene Cane corso jsou středně velkého až velkého tělesného vzrůstu, vždy však působí mohutným, silným a sebevědomím dojmem, který je navíc posilován inteligentním výrazem a přirozenou živostí tohoto plemene. Srst Cane corso je krátká, lesklá a hustá a vyskytuje se v následných barevných variacích: černá, různé odstíny rezavé, plavé, dále různé odstíny šedé barvy a žíhané variety.
Standard plemene
Psi dosahují kohoutkové výšky nejméně 64 cm, feny pak nejméně 60 cm. Tělo Cane corso je na první pohled atleticky a pevně stavěné, hřbet je rovný, hrudník nápadně osvalený. Ocas je u tohoto plemene nasazen spíše vysoko, v některých zemích je kupírován, jinak je nošen nízko nebo ve výši hřbetu. Končetiny Cane corso jsou rovné se silnými kostmi. Mírně klenutý krk má jen minimální volnou kůži a je silně osvalený. Hlava je viditelně široká s téměř stejně širokou tlamou a jen mírně zúženým čenichem. Středně velké uši Cane corso jsou trojúhelníkového tvaru a jsou svěšené. Oči jsou tmavé s bystrým výrazem.
Základní péče
Exteriér Cane corso nevyžaduje zvláštní péči. Jedná se ale o původně lovecké plemeno, které i když je dnes považováno za společenské a domácí, vyžaduje i nadále dostatek pohybu, chytré zábavy a alespoň základní minimální výcvik. Rovněž tak výchova a úspěšná socializace je velice důležitá, má-li se pes plemene Cane corso úspěšně zařadit do rodiny a jejího širšího okolí.
Zvláštní nároky
Vyplývají z poněkud paradoxní povahy Cane corso. Tito psi oplývají dostatečnou silou i odhodlaností zneškodnit každého i domnělého nepřítele nebo soka. Je proto nezbytné započít ve velmi mladém věku s důslednou výchovou, která ale nesmí být zaměňována za snahu donutit tyto psy k poslušnosti silou nebo dokonce násilím - takové jednání se nakonec obrátí proti majiteli. Cane corso bude respektovat jen přirozeně autoritativního pána, který bude výchovu psa praktikovat s klidem a porozuměním. Na druhou stranu je nutné vzít v potaz i dobrácké srdce těchto psích atletů a vytvořit pro ně doslova rodinné zázemí. Cane corso se nehodí pro venkovní držení mimo okruh rodiny, nehodí se pro nejisté začínající chovatele a psychicky labilnější jedince.
